|
I am literally sitting in my car, with my laptop, parked on a street in a random neighborhood stealing someone's wireless internet to check my mail to deal with dance stuff, wedding stuff, job stuff.... because I STILL HAVE NO F*****NG POWER!!!!!
I am getting seriously pissed off with the lazy assholes at the power company.

12:00 pm - Ouch, that hurts.
|

They have to assess the damage to give us an accurate estimate of how long to expect no power, and that will take them up to 48 hours (tomorrow night?)..... and in the mean time, it could take 7 days to get power back. YIKES. I think, as we are one of the largest cities in the area of power outage, and have the most customers without power, we will be first to get "fixed" but.... only time will tell.

10:49 am - LIGHTS OUT
|
Haven't updated this site in a while.
I am sitting at a Cosi, using the wi-fi and drinking San Pellegrino. Apparently the remnants of the hurricane decided to make it this far in-land, mostly to spite me and make me eat my words, and there were tremendous sustained winds yesterday for several hours. So, not surprisingly, there was a large POP sound, something heavy fell, and there was no more power. Power lines, and trees, down all over the city. Half a million people at least without power. And where are all the stalwart employees of American Electric Power? In Texas, helping with the hurricane! Oops.
So, no lights, no computers, no air conditioning, no refrigerator, and soon no hot water. That kind of sucks. Luckily, we have a gas stove-top, so we can still make hot meals. I forsee a lot of pasta and bean dishes in our future if the power doesn't come back on soon.
Of course, the major mega-shopping center north-east of the city has full power. Nice. So, that mean Jake still goes to work today and I had to follow him up here to hang out at this shop for the internet and power. (Yeah, wasn't getting up at 5:45am to go with him when his shift actually started.)
Also hoping the phone battery lasts. Will have to venture far away to plug it in when it dies, and our house phone is digital! Not good. Where did I put that analog phone?

the new Harry Potter movie is awesome!* Hurray for dark and twisted things!
*Disclaimer: I have never read the books, so this statement in no way implies that the movie was accurate to the literary nature, spirit of fantasy, character development, or actions portrayed in the book(s).

12:03 pm - FINALLY!
|
So after many weeks (about 7) of searching for work and applying to approximately 4 jobs a day, I have found work!
Pros:
- The office is literally one block up the street from my apartment! Sweet.
- The main office is in some other city, and the partners mostly work from there, but want someone to be at this office to "hold down the fort" so to speak. Meaning? No annoying co-workers to deal with most of the time. Also, no boss/supervisor hovering over me most of the time.
- It is full-time work during normal business hours, and the guy doesn't care when I start as long as it is between 8:30 and 9:30am. Awesome!
- It has an HSA -- some new-fangled pseudo-health insurance policy. Apparently it is like an IRA, and the company pays into it every year, and you are expected to pay into it so that when you need to spend money on health or dental, you have a fund to draw from. Weird, but better than nothing.
Cons:
- Office is literally 2 bare rooms in the basement of an office complex. Meaning? No windows.
- I'm not exactly sure *what* it is the company does. The guy wasn't very clear about it. I think it is some cross between accounting, doing out-sourcing, and managing properties. On their office voice mail they referred to themselves as "consulting".... yeah, that sounds good. "Consulting." So, that is a bit confusing.
- Pay is only $10/h. Not as much as I was hoping for, but it is the acceptable minimum. I will actually be slightly better off each month at that rate and full time than I was as a full-time GA for the Ohio State University. Sad. (At least I don't have to teach disaffected college students beginning tap anymore.)
- Man said I could get bonuses or commissions if I 'bring them work' -- but what the hell is it you do? How on earth do I do that? So... hmmm. (I suppose that's not a con, unless I can't figure it out.)
Frankly, I'm just happy to have a job so I am making some income and not having to stand on my feet all day to do it. I can't ask for a better location, so that is exciting.
In other news, I am going to Durham on Thursday to see Jake (and the show he is involved with producing) and then we are driving up to N. VA to see the family and some friends, and then we are driving back to Columbus on the 4th so there is time to talk to caterers and the like. Too much driving, granted, but my flight only cost about $40 after taxes. Go skybus!
Also, the ice maker on my fridge seems to be haunted....
END TRANSMISSION

3:48 pm - Tragedy, Success, and Randomness
|
Firstly, I can't believe there is now a university school shooting. This is increasingly unbelievable. Prayers and condolences to all those suffering from this tragedy.
In other news, my life is now my own again. I have just finished the last Comprehensive Examination question of my masters project. It is a 27 page analysis of my project, and I have been working on it for 4 weeks! The chair of my committee seemed to imply that my oral defense would be a breeze, and if they were really going to fail my project I would have know about it months and months ago. So, here's hoping it goes smoothly and I graduate!
Now that I'm free, I am going to see the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters tonight. Woo-hoo! Crazy. Hope everybody is doing well.
